The Wairarapa Daily. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 1883. MR GEORGE BEETHAM.

The member-for this electorate leaves New Zealand by the outgoing mail steamer at the end of this week for a brief visit to Europe, Wfl have been jo accustomed to have Mr Beetham working for this district all the year round, in session and out of session that hi* absence from us even for six months will be a loss. For many years past he has devoted the whole of his time to the discharge of public duties, to serving the colony, and to serving his constituents, The demands which have been made upon him by this district haye never been light. Every elector who has had a grievance, and the number of them has been legion, has been accustomed to lay the burden of it on Mr Beetham and no effort has ever been wanting, on his part to give the needed assistance. Looking back over the past seven or eight years it would ba difficult to find any member who has done as much for his constituents as Mr George Beetham. Large interests havo been safe in his hands, while at the same time he has never neglected small ones, He has striven to represent all classes in the community, and he has been very successful in his efforts. When Mr Beetham first went into the House he was the most popular man in the Wairarapa. He may be bo now, but wo do not attach much importance to mere popularity. Party feeling iudb rather high just now and slanders and calumnies are freely circulated which would not have been seven yws ago, In this respect the district has gone backwards rather than forwards. We venture, however, to assert that Mr Gsoroe Beethah has the confidence and regard of every settler in this district whose go»d opinion iB worth haying, and we feel that we should not be doing our duty as a public journalist on the present occasion, when we are called upon to say good-bye to our old and trusted representative for half a year, if we did not express in Bome way .the sense, of J obligation which ' settlers feel towards Mr Bsethak for 1 the long and faithful services which he h«i rendered to them.. Whether in view of his somewhat hurried departure, it will be practicable to embody thesesentiments into some conventional form wo know not, but we feel assured that Mr Gmrge Beetham dairies with him the best wishes of his constituents, and that his return in due time will be warmly welcomed by all classes in the community,
