CASTLEPOINT DISTRICT.

(fbom our owncorrespondent.) Bain set in last night; from the north-east, and continued all day; the rivers are in a moderate state of flood. _ Stops will be taken in a few days time to open the Mangapakeha road for dray traffic. The Cashpoint road is in a fair order, in fact it has been all the winter. Settlers are beginning to put in their corn crops principally oats. The lambing has now fairly commenced, and, judging from present appearances, there will be a splendid increase. ■ There are some inquiries for fat cattle, Mr D. Knight I notice is in the district with the object of purchasing. ■ ■> \ h .. Shearing will probably, commence early this season, .stockownera being in fear of scab, and also wishing to git, rid of fat stock.

Mr T. P. Ramsey, the new proprietor of the Club Hotel, Castlepoint, returns in. a' few days from Melbourne to take possession of that famed hostelry. > Whakataki hotel has also. changed hands, Mr Brinkman retiring in favor of Mv James Wilson. The new lessee, it is reported, intends to establish a wool scouring business in the neighborhood. . .

I note that the fair hostess of the Tinui Hotel has made some much required 1 improvements, in the way of metalling round the outbuildings and stable. The satisfactory manner in which this hotel h conducted makes it highly popular, and a capital trade appears to result. Drunkenness is on the decline iti this district. The presence of Constable Colleston, I fancy, is the cause of it; he is evidently the right man in the right, place, I regret to say that yesterday 8 painful accident happened to a man nomed John Felton, an employee on lea Station, It appears that while working at a threshing machine, he got his hand entangled in Borne of the wheels, arid two of his fingers were so badly crushed that he had to proceed to Masterton to obtain medical aid. 'The County agitation still seems the burning question here. Should -the suspenders gaih the day, it is probable that every effort will be made to perfect the road to'- Castlepoint, improve the shipping appliances there, and let the Masterton traffic" rip." It is also mooted to get this riding formed into a County. The enterprising firm of Elder & Co.; Langdale, have just completed the planting of some two thousand, olive trees, recently imported from Australia. This is a new venture, and it is to be hoped will provo a success. Tree planting is also attraoting.the attention of several othor landowners here, August 31st, 1883,.
