THE BABBIT QUESTION IN
HAWKES BAY
Napier, Angust 31, A very large meeting of sheepfarmers was held yesterday to receive the rereports of Committees appointed by the sottlers in Hawkes Bay and Waipawa counties in reference to the approaching invasion of the rabbit plague Tho report states that the rabbits are on the immediate boundary of the province northward of the Akiteo river, and recommend the erection of a rabbit-proof fence from the coast running inland for fifteen miles towards Woodville, in the Seventy-mile Bush Anotherreport recommended adifferent direction offence, and condemned the line of the artificial boundary between Wellington and Hawkes Bay provincial district. The estimated cost of the fence is £3OOO. Sheepfarmers representing.a million and a quarter of sheep have agreed to pay a farthing a head to defray the cost. All the sheepowners in this district will be asked to
contribute. TheHawkes Bay members to communicate with .a; view;to securing assistance.
