Wellington, Thursday. Captain Edwin received the following telegrams this morning: "Mongoimi: Disturbances still continue; water much discolored." "Coromandel: No sign of tidal wave." There was also no sign of disturbance at Thames, Tauranga and Cashpoint.

Invercargill, Thursday. A destructive fire occurred at Wyndhara this morning. The buildings destroyed were D. Milne's Farmers' Arms Hotel (with hall attached), and J. Rankin's store. The fire broke out in the hall, and so gave time to save a large quantity of furniture from the hotel. Rankin's stock was insured for £2OO in the New Zealand and £SOO in the South British ; and Milne's furniture for £360 in the New Zealand office.

THE CHILD MURDER CASE

Hawera, Thursday. . Josephine Green was yesterday brought up on the remanded charge of child murder. The Rev Mr Williams, Wesleyan minister, to whom the girl said she had given the child, deposed he had only spoken toiler once, and knew nothing of the child. The baby's dress and flannels, much soiled, were found in a hedgo down in a gully near here.

Mrs Hughes, midwife, said she made tho flnnnels, and the child was wearin" them when its mother took her away. The theory of defence ia that the child was given to George Williams, a married man.

The father of the child is supposed to he living in the Forty-Mile Bush, and every effort is to be made to discover him. A special man is to he sent to trace him.
