" Your committep, iu presenting their annual report, are sorry that they cannot congratulate tho subscribers on the financial position of tho Institute. It will be seen by the balance-sheet that although Jhero is at present a balance to credit of £lO 2s 2d, yet the. liabilities at the end of the year exceo» dedthe assets by £9 5s lOd. This will, however, be met by the subscriptions now due; and which your committee would hope to "see promptly paid, so that the work of the Institute may not be retarded. This will appear tho mora necessary, because of the decision of tho Government not to grant any Library subsidies for the current year, and it appears to your committee necessary that some active steps should be taken to raise funds to procure fresh supplies of now books. Towards this end the committee, have been reluctantly compelled to reduce the librarian's salary to £l6 per annum, It will also be necessary for the incoming committee to reduce the oxponsus of tho public reading room, which are unusually heavy. "Notwithstanding the crippled state of the funds the committee have been enabled during the,, year to procure about eighty and these, together with donations of several books from MessrsSkeetaudßlaok(towhom thethar.ks of the committee are due), have increased the already large number of works in the library by over one hundred volumes.
