To thb Editor.

; Siit,-rl ; am at Ipsa to know why it is that there has"' been ho notice given at the branch Posr/Offiee at Kuripuni of the two lust mails that have left Masterton for England. . It seems strange that the : p'oit&l -authorities' ibaye'nbt even taken.the trouble' to inform .the' Kuripuni branch postmaster that the mail (special) on Monday Inst and the 1 and the one this." day was -to : be forwarded j 'and" I think had notice been "given of. those mails to leave many more would have availed themselves of the opportunity of sending correspondence by them, lam, etc. ■'"■'■. Ti'W. Bhutb. Maatertonj 23rd August, 1883. [Notice, was given in our advertising columns.—Ed. W.D.] PASTORAL SOCIETY'S PRIZES

To ihe Editor,

Sißr—l was pleased to observe in a recent issue.of 'your paper attention being culled to. the injustico done.to the coacnbuilderS of-the Wairarapa in the allotting of prizes by the Pastoral and Agricultural Society, who year after year over since its formation have taken their money for entries and returned nothing for it except their famous certificates of merit, of which they are quite prodigal. The matter no doubt only requires bringing under the attention of the Stewards to be remedied in the. forthcoming show. I would also suggest that in future the class for buggies should bo separated from the implement and produce class, and extended to include wheeled carriages of all kinds, it being manifestly unfair to make thorn compete in points of entry for medals with suoh articles as butter kegs, cheese,, bacon, tallow, casks ic, all excellent things in their way, but' produced at trifling cost compared with buggies and more expensive carriages. If the Society have any wish to encourage carriage builders whoso exhibits are a feature and attraction to many visitors, ladies especially, they will in the future ondoavor to carry out the reform suggested, and by. giving prizes ; sufficient/''at* least, .to 1 cover, ehtrjes' and carriage to the ground: enable builders at a distance to compete with ..the Wairarapa manufacturers,', .who .will then have some honor and'inducement in striving to gain apprize.. The amount of time and trouble that has to he devoted in preparing a first-class vehicle for exhibition, besides the risk of damage through wet weather, muddy roads, and having ■to stand out in the open air all 'day, no matter what the weather may'be; also expense; in, transit, .surely deserves some better recognition at the hands of the Society than has been obtained in the past. Trusting this matter will receive your further support, and consideration from the Pastoral Society, :, ~ lam, 4c, ' . ' Fifth Wheel,

" THE LITTLE GAmYoF LAND^ ■>■;■.• ORAft? : |TO THE EDITOR OF THE DAILY. | Sir,—A gentleman in Masterton informed me this morning that a letter headed as above, and which appeared iii your paper of yesterday, as copied from the Star,'had been attributed to me, I beg most destinctly and unreservedly to deny all.knowledge of the letter, in question,; as also of the matter with which it treats, Nor have I the faintest suspicion as to its authorship. I will add that to'the.best of my recollection I have, not addressed any communication to a local newspaper within tlio last twelvemonths that did not hear my signature. • . ; ."; 1 am, <fcc., : Edwin Meredith.
