THE POULTRY, PIGEON, CANARY, AND DOG SHOW.
(Abridged from the Times.)
The second exhibition of the Wellington : Poultry, Pigeon, Canary, and Dog Association was opened at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, when His Excellency the Governor attended at the Drillshed, where he was received by 'His Worship the Mayor, Mi Charles Johnston, M.H.R., ■ and the; stewards: of the Society, The hall had been gaily festooned with Sags, and the scene, shortly after the arrival of Sir William Jervol?, was a most animated oiio, owing, in a great measure to the very large number of ladies who attended on the occasion. The arrangements made by the Committees appeared ° to be of the most perfect eharaotor, and evidently gave unqualified satisfaction hot . only -to the pub' lie, but also to the exhibitors. In the aggregate the exhibits are more numerous than those of last year, when the exhibition Was held in St George's Hall, the entries in all classes being 140 in excess of those of the first show, The poultry exhibits are equal to last year's, but the breed of the different, classes is undoubtedly superior, The show ot canaries is rather disappointing; never tlielesa, there are some really beautiful and evidently carefully-bred Belgians shown, especially by Messrs D. D, Hyde, bj. W. Hope, and J. W. Hill. The pigeon exhibits, however, uodoubt, claim, and deservedly so, the pride of place in the exhibition. The variety is almost bewildering, as the judges must have found; but as judges should do, they have kept " a wary eye," and their success is shown by the decisions they have made. Messrs A, Elkiiiß and E. Edmunds have divided the honors in this class, and it is. difficult to say which may be said to oarry the palm. The show of poultry may be character ised ss magnificent, whether as regards the number or the breed' of the birds shown, The golden spangled, and gold and silver- pencilled Hamburghs, wero all that could be desired, whilst the black Hamburgh' group, consisting of a cock and two hens, shown by Mr F, J. Franoe, well deserved the honors it received. The Spanish varioties, as far as numbers went, wore slightly disappointing, but their breed was, in nearly every instanoe, exceedingly good. The prido of the show in large birds was certainly most deservedly awarded to Mr F. G. Franoe for a cage of buff Cochin dck and two hens; nor must the dark Brahma cock two hens, exhibited by Mr James Prentice, bo omitted. Sumo beautiful Polands wero shown by Misj Atkins. Mr A. Elkins, and Mr G. Mills, 'the display of game cocks was good, but for some reason or other they did not appear U> attract the attention they were entitled to. The Newfoundland dogs can scarcely be said to be up to expectation, It is so difficult mw-a-days to get a true bred dog of this description. A dog shown by Mr W, G. Lsnkshsar, and a Glut shown by Mr > Guthrie, were perhaps the best of their claas. The mastiff claimed considerable attention, as also did a couple of Ulmer boar hounds, which, 'it was stated, are the only specimens of the celebrated German breed in the colony. Tha greyhound family was well reprei Bunted, and some decidedly aristocratic , lineage was shown, noticeably by O.and , E. J. Hill, who carried' off the majority of honors in this class. Fox terriers were in great force, and the majority of them 1 obtained a large share of attention .and > commendation. One of the prettiest sights in the bqow is a bull terrier slut and litter of three puppies, exhibited By Mr G. W. Smart, It is to be regretted that there appears to be almost a total absence of the wireworker's art placed for exhibition. There are a variety of curious looking incubators and artificial' mothers' shown, with complicated" appliances, which appear to be theoretically, at any rate, calculated to in time die--1 pense wiih ihe natural process of incubation, The show, as a whole, may be pro.
nounced a great success. The Stewards; and the Hon. Secretary (Mr E. E. Edmunds), are to be congratulated upon the satisfactory results which have attended their efforts, not only to caier'for for'the public entertainment, but also to improve the breed of dumestio animals. The attendance last evening was satisfactory, ; and the doei sio'ns of the Judges/witty, perhaps, but one or two exceptions, appeared to give no ground for cavil or dispute. The undermentioned" Wairarapa exhibitors carried off the following prizes at the Show .•—Dorking cock and two hens,L M. Isitt, Ist; guidon spangled Hamburg c<ick and two hens, A.
