CouNTiEß:and Road /Boards, the Former bodies in particular, are at the present time dependent to a'great extent on grants for-special works under the Roads and Bridges -Construction Act, The action taken by the House within the-next few days as to the conditions under which these|iantsare'to' be continued will be of vital importance to them. It is reported that the applications already made are out of all proportion to the hinds available, and, the question of precedence becomes one of importance. We have good reason to believe that this point will be decided by the amount:.of rates raised locally. Local bodies which impose the maximum rate of three farthings; will be considered to have the "first claim, and will possibly take the lion's share of the grants,' Of course it is premature as yet to realise the result of these new conditions which are likely to be imposed by Parliament on the administra-
