The Wairarapa Daily. THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 1883. LAST NIGHT'S MEETING.
We ajie very well satisfied wilh the result of last night's meeting. Tho subject of county taxation was fairly placed-be-fore tho county 'ratepayers who wero [irejent, nod many of them who before joining in the cry to suspend tho county ivaiied lo hear both sides of the question, ■ire noiv very unlikely to subscribe their names lo Hie proposed petition; It is true that I hey are sore on the question-of taxation, but they are no' prepared to adopt blindly any course which may be proposed to relievo them of-th'e burthen 'of excessive rating without first of all seeing clearly that the remedy will not be worse than the disease, and that the in terests of the district will not be sacrificed liy a sudden and ill-considered change. I'bero will be amplu opportunities yet for such settlers to decide what course should be taken to secure the most efficient and economical means of local government. The County sus pendeis have offered a programme, viz,, ■' knot-king the County on the head " without consideration as to the conset|iiences We believe that some of the leaders of iho County party, who, while they are averse to excessive rating, are yet not prepared by any sudden change >u inllict a serious injury on the progress of ruiid construction in this district, will ilso shortly place a programme before tho County electors; and we have not the ali«li! est doubt that when both are dispassionately considered, the latter, and not the former, will have the support of country settlers,
