NEW BUILDINGS.
Queen-street, Masterton, has received an addition to its business places in the shape of a handsome two-storied block of buildings intended for two shops and dwellings, one being already opened as the Bon Marcho clothing department, and the other, as .soon as the internal fittings are complete, will be opened by Mr T. G. Mason, chemist, ike., to whose order.the buildings have been erected. The first named shop is 30ft by 17ft fiin, match-lined and painted white throughout, The latter is 27ft by 17ft 6in, with an office 6ft by 10ft in the left corner, The fittings for this shop are of an elaborate kind, prepared and fixed by Messrs Bacon & Go. The framings are of red pine, with totara mouldings, and white pine panelling, shewing, under the influence of the polish, a splendid .contrast. The office, which is surmounted by a bold cornice, .is contracted of tho- same materials, The exterior has a very striking appearance, the upper story having triple circular-headed windows, with pilasters' at'each end and between each frame, supporting the heads. Pilasters are also placed at each end of the block, at the top of which a heavy cornice rests, surmounted by a panelled parapet, with finales at the end and centre, The front has -been painted and sanded, to iinitate stonework, giving it a very solid appearance. The verandah has a circular top of corrugated iron, supported by five ornamental posts capped and bracketed. in good proportions, : To afford as much light as possible to the shops, the verandah has been painted \yhite underneath, and. as the posts are of a brown stone Solor, picked out' in white, it gives tho lower portion of the building: a very attractive appearance. Botli. shops have plate gIS|S windows,' with ilireV each,- the sashes being a chocolate color, with light stone surroundings, Between these and at earih fend, large pilastors • reach' from the ground to the-roof-of:the" giving j-FaMinj'j'who is to be ,'crediipd :with*: adding another architectural landmark to the Borough; ~ Mr. J. .Montgomery, the contractor, has carried out- the. work in a thproughly effioient and Wkmanjike manner,
