Between two and three o'clock ' this morning Constable Loaby, who was on duty at that hour, observed a fire to tho north of Masterton, At first lie thought that the Wnipoua Brewery was alight, the rain and mist preventing any distant object from being discerned, and he requested the night-watchman of the Empire Hotel to sound an alarm, That official did his duty like a man, tugging at the bell till tho town was thoroughly roused. "Turning out of bed" was universal, but moat people, after reoonnoitering the weather, prudently returned to ihe shelter of their blankets. In the meantime Constable Leahy crossed the Waipoua, and found that the cause of the alarm was a whare on the brow of the hill, belonging to Mr Ewington. These premises were blazing furiously, but hb they wero riot of a very valuable oharaoter the constable retraced his steps in order to allay the alarm which had been created. A considerable number of the general public, including • members of the Fire Brigade, had braved the elements, and were Bomewhat disgusted to find that only a whare was alight. The value of the premises destroyed does not exceed ten pounds, the principal lobs bring a quantity of tools, clothing, and boiidjng, which was deposited in them, We learn from Mrs Ewington that the fire was evidently the work of an incendiarist, There are no traces of the clothing or some sheep skins which were in the whare, among the burnt embers, and she is of the opinion (hat tho parson or poraons who' set alight to lbs/ whare, carried them off, The building wai uplined, and on a wetinight-it mnet have taken some slight trouble-to burn it down, The premises and their contents were un. insured, '
