In the House of Commons last night, Mr Gladstone made his promised statement as to the course which the Government intended to pursue regarding the provisional agreement which was' signed by Mr Ohilders and Comte de Lessepg for the construction of a second canal through the Isthmus of Suez. The, Government, the Premier stated, had decided not to ask Parliament to sane-. tion the agreement in its present form, since it had been generally disapproved by the commercial and shipping interests. Mr Gladstone added that the Government had arrived at this decision in order that the time might be obtained for considering a better scheme, and one by which the canal would ultimately be. brought under the control and management, of an International Commission. It has transpired that Comte de Lesseps has written a letter to Mr Gladstone announcing that the Suez Canal Company has decided to undertake the construction of the second canal, and will introduce the reductions in tariff specified in the agreement arrived at by himself and Mr Ohilders.
