DISCOVERY OF GOLD IN CANTERBURY,
Christchnrch, July 23,
George Frederick Smith, of Southbridge, has applied to Government for the reward for the discovery of a payable goldfiold in Canterbury. It was lie who submitted samples of the wash dirt to Dr Skcy. The field extends along the Ninety Mile Beach from the Rakaia River. An. auriferous layer of sand may be traced both north and south of the river for mora than sixteen miles between high and low water mark, The depth of the workable sand ranges from 3in to 3ft, theaverage depth being eight inches, Mr Smith estimates tho yield at £3 a man a week. He has found a second deposit of equally rich sand extending from the beach along tho western shore of Lake Ellesmore for a distance of two or three miles. Some olaims have been pegged 011S, each man taking a length of ninety feet, Four men have taken up a leaso of ten acres under, the prospecting license, near the Ninety Mile Beach and Tarimutu.
