UNITED PRESS &SBOOIATM. LONDON, '' ::•;■ • July 9th. There is thought to be considerable probability in well-informed circles that if the Australian colonies maintain the firm attitude which they have assumed in connection with the annexation of New Guinea Lord Derby will consentto annexing a portion of that territory, and islands in the Pacific. Should England accept this policy, however, it is hardly likely that she would extend it to New' Hebrides, as the Government appear perfectly willing to allow the French to annex those Islands if they desire them. At the invitation of Mr Wilson a. number of gentlemen holding Conservative views met last night at ffughenden monor, when the question of tho' /annexation of New Guinea was introduced and discussed.' Mr 'Wilson, in the course of some remarks severely denounced the action taken by Government with regard to;.this question, , Tho French Chamber of Deputies is engaged in discussing a bill which proposes to construct a railway bridge oyer the' English Channel! The Ml ; provides that the starting point of the projected:bridge shall be Cape Gries-' !jiey, a point 10 miles north of Boulogne and that'its terminus shall be Milestone a sea port town in the County •of Kent. ~ ; . ■ • -Lord Sjdniouth's, motion for the pro-, 'diiction of correspodence in 'with the naval forces for tho colonies' was discussed last night. In the eourso of the debate,' Earl Carnarvon expressed his opinion that the ' whole responsibility of initiating a scheme of naval defence for tho colonies rested with the Imperial Govern ment, whose duty it was to draw up a general scheme and submit.it to the various Colonial Governments. Lord Derby denied that it was the •duty of the Imperial; Government to take the initiative in such a scheme. He contended that as tho colonies would be mainly benefited by a thorough system of naval defence they should-first move in the matter, and the Imperial Government might then supplement their efforts, Lord Sidmouth's motion was then negatived, A,debate took place in the House of Commons last night upon a motion introduced by Hon: H.
