RIFLE MATCH.

WELLINGTON GUARDS V, MABTERTON ■ RIFLESA match between the above corps was fired at the Manaia range on Saturday last, resulting in a win for the home team by ten points. The visitors arrived on Friday evening, and were entertained at the Yolunteor ball held in the Theatre. As • the rain waß pouring down in torrents, with about half a gale of wind blowing there' was not a very bright prospect of a fine day for the contest, so the team went in for enjoyment, and kept .up; the dancing with spirit till four o'clock in the morning. Contrary to expectations Saturday morning was everything that could be desired for the match; the weather being calm and bright,' Sergt. Cole and Vol. W. A. Wiltonpfficiatpi}! , at the" butts, and Vol. Smith'and Cot-jfek. Sergt. Dixon at the firing point. At/~# the 200 yards, the home team assumed j + a lead of 17 points; this was reduced by the visitors to 4 at the 300 yards; The weather now changed, and became' very squally, rendering the firing any-' . thing but pleasant. The visitors too were anxious to catch the train, so . they fired in succession at this range, and left their opponents to finish the: match. This, was done in a biting south-east squall, the home team increasing. their lead to 10. The throughout was not first , class, some of the cracks making very poor scores at the long runup, but if the. weather and dancing are taken into consideration this is not to be wondered at. The following are the scores:— • .
