MASTERTON HOSPITAL.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of tho Mastevton Hospital was held yesterday. Present —Messrs Boddington (in the chair), Bennotfc, Fannin, Beetham, Bish, Payton and Sellar. The following report and balance sheet was read : EBPORT.
The Committee in submitting their annual report nnd balance sheet to sub' embers, desire io point Out that although the Hospitial is gradually becoming more effectual it does not obtain that amount of support which might reasonably be expected considering the growing population of the district, and the Committee feel assured that unless more intrest is token by the public generally tho institution cannot be maintained at its present standard of efficiency, Thirteen meetings of the Committee have been held during tho past year. The attendances of tho members are as follows: —J. 0. Boddinnton, 13; Joseph Payton, 12; W.H. Beetham, 8; Walter Perry, 7 ; Joseph Beanott 6; Joseph lorns, 6; J. V. Smith, 5; E Feist, 3; A. Bish, 3; G. Fannin, 3 (from February) ; J. Vile,
The number of patients admitted during the past year were 30 males and 2 females, Of these 26 have been diseharged cured or relieved, 6 have died, and 2 are still in the Hospital. During the preceding twelvemonths the number admitted was 23, it will thus be seen that the increase during 1882-83 was 50 per cent.
The balance sheet attached g shows receipts for the year to have been: sub soriptions, £l7l Gs Id; patient's fees, £24105; Government subsidies, £14719s lid. making tho total for the year of £344 6s, which added to the balance in hand at July 1, 1882, of £125 Os 6d, makes a grand total of £469 Gs 6d. The expenditure during the same period amounted to £55613s 6d. leaving a credit balance to oommence the year with of £12133 Gd. Tho expenditure as compared with previous years may appear heavy, but this is owing in a groat measure to the increase in the number of patients, also to considerable outlay in fitting up a lavatory for the uso of the patients, in addition to which other improvements have been made increasing the comfort of patients. Dr Grabham, Inspector of Hospitals paid a visit to the Instituton and for the information of subscribers his report is attached.
The reoenfc improvements made to the Hospital grounds are very noticeable, the paths having been laid off with taste, and the genoral appearance is very creditable to the Custodian, and the Committee desire to record ihoir thanks to Mr Bulpitt fur the great interest which he has shown in this very important part of the work.
The Committee would again call the attention of subscribers to the fact that the county and borough subsidies are still withheld, and it is to be hoped that during the ensuing year settlers will . be more liberal with their subscriptions, so that the committee may continue improving the buildings and proouring the necessaries for the thorough equipment of the institution.
The officers connected with the hospital have discharged their duties to the satisfaction of the Committee during the past year. Dr Hosking has been regular in his attendance. Mr and Mrs Bulpit, the custodian and matron, are again to be oomplimented for the admirable order and cleanliness ,of the, hospital, and, also for tlieir unremitting attention' to the wants jand comfort of the patients committed to their charge. The thanks of subscribers •are-.due to Mr J, Payton, the honorary treasurer,,not only for the very efficient manner in which he has performed the duties of the office during the past year, but also for the Warm .interest he* evinces in the success of the hospital and his exertions in forwarding its welfare. In conclusion the Committee have every Mason to be aatisSed with the manner in
which the duties of secretary are performed by Mr W. Sellar. J. 0. BODDMGTON, Chairman. Balance Sheet, receipts.

The Chairman, in moving the adoption of tho report, pointed out that Dr Grabham's testimony was conclusive as to the satisfactory manner ia which tho hospital had been conducted. A circular hud recently been issued to residents in tho neighborhood, which he hoped would be the means of materially increasing. their list of subscribers. . They had already, received many ; promises of support, and very shortly the secretary, in conjunction with some members of the committee, proposed making a house to house canvass, He would be happy to take his own share ' of the work. The efficient state of the ; hospital gave them a claim on the sup- . port of the community. They were ; : also specially in need of funds to paint the building, and supply a kitchen :' range as suggested by Dr Grabham.. The motion was seconded by Mr•■■, Beetlmm and carried.
