In the House of Commons to : day Mr Gladstone, in replying to a question, announced that tho despatch replying to the application of the Queensland Government for the annexation of New Guinea was nearly ready for transmission. The despatch, the Premier stated, would refuse to confirm the action of the colonial Government, which, moreover, was mill and void in point of law, and unwarranted by the circumstances of the case. As regards the policy of annexation, the Government considered that a colony was unsuited to hold such functions, and annexation by a foreign Power was not feared.
