MEAT EXPORT COMPANY.

[TO THE EDITOIt OF THE DAILY,]

• Sir,—Referring to your report of the meeting held in Carterton in connection with the Freezing Meat Company, the efforts put forth by its chairman—Mr Buchanan—in soliciting through public meetings, help, financially and otherwise on behalf of his company tiro laudable, and Mr Buchanan deserves the thanks of the settlers of the Wairarapa for his courage in taking the matter up and pushing it on so .well as he has. Bub .shareholders may certainly expect that their capital will yield no return in dividends for the next four or five years; at all events, not until Wellington is connected by train, via Masterton, with Napier, and with the West Coast via tho Manawatu railway. It is simply absurd to expect until these works are completed that Wellington can do what Otago : and Canterbury can do in the way of exporting meat. And yet, for freezing works, this company appears to have gone very far ahead of either of them; this, in itself, will be much dormant capital. To prove this I would point out that whereas, Canterbury and Otago must get rid of their surplus stock either by boiling down or exporting frozen meat, the same necessitydoes not exist in this district. We have requirements for stock—to put upon fresh land every year: and those requirements will continue for many years to come. Thus, it will be seen that if the Wellington Meat Export Company have to depend upon this district solely for its supplies it will fare badly, and if it sends away one or two shipments a year, it will, to my mind, do well. Let our members, with Wellington, urge the completion of railways to connect the town with the country, and then, and not till then, will this particular company pay, I am, ifcc, . .j, Settler.
