"Red earth, flour, coffee-grounds, caramel, talc, plumbago, vermicelli and semolina powder, bean-dust, acorns, grilled figs, beetroot, carrots, red ochre, sawdiißt, brickdust, ashes, mahogany shavings, vegeteble earth, sand." What, it will be asked, does this long enumeration mean 1 Jt is copied word for word from the report of the director of the Paris Municipal Laboratory for February, and it is simply a list of the substances of which a sample of cheap coil'ee was found to be composed. And some dearer samples onlydiffered from it in containing an admixture, greater or less, according to the price, of chicory. Even the chicory itself was found to be largely adulterated. " The wretches!" says one of Barbey d'Aurevillier's characters; " they adulterate even the poisons." It is certain that they adulterate (he adulterations, Out of ninety-one specimens of coffee last month in Paris, only thirteeff-were ascertained to bo pure coffee.—'St. James' Gazette. 1
