CANTERBURY LIVE STOCK MARKET.

Messrs if. Matson & Go. report upon the live stook market, &c,, for the week ending Thursday, May 24, as follows For yosterday's Addington market a largo supply of sheep again came to hand, the entry represontiug sill the various classes, from heavy weight prime cross-breds, quotable'at 17s to 19s, down to aged toothless merino wethors, at 2s and 2s (id per head. The attendance included the usual representatives of ■ the trade, but the full market of prime mutton from which to choose caused buyers to exhibit a certain amount of apathy in their bidding, and values must bo reoorded as sti.l showing & slight d jwnward tendency. During tlie early portion of tho sale one or two lots of sheep wero withdrawn, but tli y were for the most part placed afterwards ;a t iter ruling auction rates. In cross-bred s tho best lines of wetbera brought 16s to tid (one pen of especially heavy weiglit3 realised 19s); medium weights, 14s to 16s, or equal to an average quotation of about 2Jd per lb. Merino wethers were well represented as to numbers, but the quality on the whole was very indifferent, many of tho lines of socalled mutton being more suitable to put on turnips than for tho butcher's use. For such 7s to 8s per head were the raliug rates, a few pena of better and heavier sheep going up to 10s 9d. In stores the demand was governed entirely by the sheep on offer, fresh conditioned 2 and 4'tooth cross-breds for grazing purposes, realising 12s to 13s 6d; shorn lambs, tis to 7s; merino wethers, 6a to 7s 6d; aged cull lots being difficult of clear, ince, evod at comparatively low rates. There is no doubt but the present season of the year is causing buyers to be much moro careful as to what class of sheep they put oil their feed than they were- two mouths since, as inferior and aged.lines, then readily saleable, are only placed 'how with considerable trouble, and that at' largely reduced values. In beef there was a more than usnilly large entry, Mr Walter Wright's confii|aiient, as well its several other lines, beinjsiboiit tho average quality. For the ( lieli/cattlo, a slight improvement in trale, was noticeable, Mr Wright's steers bringing from £7los to £9 6s, .or an average of about £Bs 8s per head and fully equal to 22s per 100 lbs, Lighter weights and iuferior quality, 18s to 20s. In store oattle there wore a good many on offer; but althouah prices were low, and no alteration in values can be noted/ Ave yet manßgod to clear every lot of our entry at prices as por description, Of a sapply,of pigs below the average of the past two or weeks/ thcro werebut few of the right weight or quality for" curing," every line available for that purpose being briskly competed for by tho various representatives of tho trade. Other lots also sold well. The totals yarded for the day comprised 9142 sheep, 468 head of cattle, and 261 pigs, of which our outry included 3386 sheep, 277 head of oattle, and 157 pigs.
