The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, JUNE 1, 1883. MASTERTON R.M. COURT.

The completion of new Court buildings now iu course of-erection in Masterton will, no doubt, tend to facilitate the transaction of the legal business of this district, but still, like" Oliver Twist," we feel disposed to ask for more. The bulk of the legal business of the Wairarapa is now transacted in 1 Masterton, and yet the Resident Magistrateof the district, resides some twentyfive miles away lrora what are virtually his head-quarters. The fortnightly visit which he pays to us now is altogether' inadequate for the work which he should, iu his capacity as a paid Magistrate, perform. In his absence the local Justices, more especially tiie Mayor of this tWn, have an excessive aud undue amount of work thrown on their hands. Almost every day they are called upon to adjudicate upon some case or other. We almost question whether Mr Bibh is not giving as much time to Court duties as if lie were a paid Resident Magistrate, We can quite 'understand, that it might be a considerable personal sacrifice for Mr Wardell to have to remove from Featherstoii to Masterton, but much as we esteem him as an old settler, v. hose position and services in this d...liicfc entitle him to every consideration, wu cannot for one moment place his personal and individual interests before those of the general public. The time has, in our opinion, arrived when a representation should bo made to the Minister of Justice as to the necessity of locating a Resident Magistrate in the township of Masterton. We do not, of course, assume that any other Magistrate than'Mr Wardell would be placed here, but of course tho settlers of this town while they have a perfectriglit to demand the convenience of a Resident Magistratecould not with propriety indicate the namo ef any person who should occupy that position. It is too, we consider, the duty of the solicitors of this to>vn'to take a lead in a movemerit of this kind. It would be for their comfort and convenience as well as for that of the public if more facilities could be accorded for the transaction of civil and criminal business than those we at present enjoy. If Mr Wardell were stationed in Masterton it would probably be found that he would have enough work on his hands without periodical visits to Wellington for the relief of Mr Hardcastle, This week the administration of justice in : this town has almost broken down from tho unsatisfactory arrangements which prevail. The Resident Magistrate of course is at Peatherston. The Clerk of the Court is laid up on a sick bed from overwork. The assistant i Clerk is helping the Resident Magistrate at Peatherston, and: the. Court office locked up. It is quite .time some step was taken to put matters on a better footing.

The Maslerton Town Lands Trustmeet this evening. ; We are sorry to have to report the death of Mr John Quin of Greytown, whjch occurred yesterday morning, at Ilia residence. The deceased was suffering for the last few days from a severfc attack of eresipyoß with other combinations of a serious character. The funeral takes place to-morrow at'2 p.m. Mr Quin's life was insured in the Government office for £6OO, To-morrow afternoon a big praoti'ce of the Greytown Football Club is to take place. The members of the first anri second teams, and bb many all comers as can turn up are expected to take part. The club has suffered it mere lobß in thedepartore for PalmeratonofMr G. Saywell, who has played half back for them this season, .and it is; not, only in the Football club that he will be missed, as he was also a prominent member of the cricket club, a volunteer, and ' member of the private brass band, and has identified himself with "almort every popular movement in Greytowii in the athletic line, 1 ' He'leaves Greytown with the «nod wishes of the majority of its' inhabitants for his future prosperity, i < .■■ I The publio are fully aware by this time that the only place, to get a first v'olass tea is,at Eapp and Hare's, ofthe (Emporium, We have gust received 60 half chests of i the old well-known number -Advt.

The adjourned weekly entertainment which lapsed lust Monday will-be held on Monday evoning next at the Institute, Grpytown, when a good programme will bo rendered. ■■■: ' A meeting of the Maßterton' Town Band was held last evening, when it was notified that one of the members had been sued by the captain of the volunteers fur an instrument olaimed by tho corps. It was resolved that (he case be contested on behalf of the. trustees" in whom the •instrument is vested for the benefit of the town. " James; Wh!te, a man admitted a short time ago into the Masterton Hospital at •the request of the local Benevolent Society, died last night, His case, one . ot consumption, was regarded as a hopeless one from the first, The man Murphy, who was recently injured while bushfalhng at Pahiatua, is receiving every attention at the Masterton: Hospital, but as yet it is impossible to guage'his chances of recovery, ~ At 2 p.m; to-morrow Messrs Lowes and 'lorns conduct ut sale of fruit and ornamental tree*; also of 230 sacks of potatoe oats. , « ' Mr F. H, Wood holds a general side at his Greytown auction rooms to morrow. The recent litigation betweon Oockbarn and Clayson has been followed by an . mmicablo arrangement, under whioh duyson returns to the block with a lease and Cockbum gets a lump sum for back rent. We believe that Mr W. Hammerich, who possesses an interest in the Greytown Hotel, is likely to ogam take charge of his old house, as the widow of the late Mr Quin does not propose to continue the business. Tho Masterton footballers practice tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock sharp, when the first fifteen will play tho second eighteen. The following are the teaniß: —Fifteen—Harvey, llcLachlan, McKsnzie, Morison, J. Bannister, Jamieson, C. Bannister, J, Ross, B. Ferry, DeOastro, W. Perrv, Ellera, Welch, J. Perry, C. A well-attended meeting of the Mnsterton Tent, L0.1t,, wsb held last evening The election of secretary was postponed till next meeting, on the 14th inat., when the general election of officers takes place. The Masterton Fire Brigade Annual Soiree will take place in the Theatre Roynl on Wednesday evening next. Tho committee have engaged the Volunteer String Bund for the occasion, and made special arrangements for the refreshment department. Judging from the number of tickets sold it promises to be as successful as the previous ones, We understand that arrangements are being made for a series of popular amateur enlorlainuknlß, instrumental and vooal, in tho Theatre Royal, Mas'erton, commencing on Friday evening next. The principal attraction in Queen-stroet this afternoon is a magnificent display of new goods at the Hall of Commerce, opposite the Club Hotel, Wb are informed that tho new uoads now being, shown is the third winter shipment of this season, and consists of millinery, dress good's, Silks, satins, velvots, plushoß, and aborted woollen goods. We had occasion to take notice of the very nice display of G. W. Schroder's fiist and second winter shipments this season, but the present show exceeds the two previous ones as regards display and uoveliy.—Advt. In i d lition tn ih« li.-t In aly advertised for to-morrow, Messrs I.owes & Irons sell turkeys and fowls. The fortnightly meeting of (he Waste Lands Hoard was hold yesterday, Messrs J. G. Holdsworth (Chairman and Commissioner), H. Bunny, T. Mason, and W. W. Taylor being present. The Chairman reported that no land had been sold since the previous meeting, Several transfers of deferred payment sec ions were agreed to. After some consideration the proposed expenditure of £93 Cs 3d by the Manawalu Hijhivay Board in the Kairangn Block was agreed to. Several persons were leported to bo in arrears in payments on sections; taken up under deterred payment, and they were variously dealt wiih, The dates of the next land Bale at Masterton wore postponed as follows : Deferred payrcent sections to be sold on Tuesday the 10th July, and cash sections on Thursday the 12th July. -Several matters of minor importance having been dealt with, the Board adjourned. The question has often been asked how it is that the public can always obtain at the Bon March 4 at such reasonable prices the latest novelties, and designs Buch asare now being worn in all the most fashionable towns in the world, and described in the leading Fashion Books of the day and not at any other shop in Masterton, and in some cases not in Wellington 1 The reason to us is obvious. L. J. Hooper & Co., tho proprietors, are thorough experts at their business, and buy well, only in the very best markets, andfat such prices as will enable them to sell well and cheap, and give their customers the benefit of their knowledge and experience. Also nut being bound to purchase only from the Wellington merchants they import themselves for cash, thereby gettinK a large discount, saving all middle profits, and procuring the latest fashions. We advise everyone to 1 seo their stock of millinery, dress goods, hosiery, men's and boys' clothing; also look on another page of this paper-for their—ADVERTISEMENT. These shirts, made of roally good material, and honestly worth 8s Bd each of any man's money, we shall sell at 3s Gd. The secret of this is that they have not militaiy J fronts, but manifold pleats, and do not t button behind but before Nevertheless they will look every bit as woll, and wear vastly better than one of the other sort at a much higher price. Many gentlemen of the 1 present day infinitely prefer this style, And ( it is very certain that our ancestors patroniaed no other shape. If Julius Ctssar ( wore a shirt at. all, dopend upon it that he would as soon have turned his baolr on his 1 foes as have worn one buttoned behind.
