MASTERTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
♦ The annual meeting of the Masterton Horticultural Society was held at the Council Chambers last evening when a fair attendance of members took place, Mr W. Everett the President in the chair. The report and balance sheet were read, and proved of a very satisfactory'' character. Tbe latter showed-reieipts from all sources of £97 9s lOd, and expenditure £92 7s, leaving a credit balance of £5 2s Bd, the also assets showing£2 more to come in, EEPOHT. Tour committee have pleasure in presenting their report for the year just ended and to state that notwithstanding the unfavorable seasons previous to the spring and autumn shows (in ; the former wet, cold, and frost to. within a few days of the sbow,'and in the latter dry parchin? weather)'both_ passed off well and were considered quite an improvement on previous shows, In consequence of the
town hall having been destroyed by we had to'find asuitable building to hold theautnmnshowin. Two places were available—the old sohoolhouße and the Empire store. The store was considered most suitable and was used for the purpose. At the spring show there was a great number of visitors, for, independently of the number of admissions by ticket, the Bum pf £2O was taken at the duor,and atihe autumn ehow-;Gl6—thus showing the interest taken in the'society by the public The thanks of the Committee have been sent to.Mr MoCarthj, representing Mr Krull, for the use of the Btore for the Spring Show; to Mr Oollotte for hfs exhibits of ohoice and valuable plants at the Autumn ;£how;; and to gentlemen of the Masterton Town Band for their voluntary performance at the Autumn Show, with a request that they (the members of the Band) would acoept LI towards purchasing music, ■'• Alter paying off/about £l4 due from.. laßt -year,, all: claims-have .been settled,' and there is a credit balance of about £6, and the thanks of the Society are due to the storekeepers and ladies and gentlemen who so to special prize'liats, and also lo the Bub-committeo who collected the same. Tbe Committee, at the time of the showi, verbally thanked those gentlemen who kindly came up and acted as judges, but they .would again, at this their, annual meeting, tender the thanks of. themselves'and members of the Society, to all who'have rendered assistance ■ during ' the : past year. Your committee would beg to "suggest to their suocesiors 'the necessity of' considerio« the question of making an amateur and gardener's class, For, the last two years the matter has been spoken about, and during the last year the subject has been forced upon the attention of the committee. -Some-amateurs will not oompete agaiutt professionals,.and some professionals ..will.' not. exhibit agaiiißt amateurs, but • where the ■ line is to he drawn will have to be considered. Paige, as / President. Mr Everett said he had years in office anU'he would "now like to give way to some other member, more particularly as he lived so far out of the town. The members present, however, v.'ould not acccept Mr Everett's retirement and he was ■ unanimously reelected, after several complimentary remarks had been passed on his past actions, MrT. Parsons was then elected Vice-President, and the following com--mittee elected;— Messrs' W. M. %schope, S, Wigkewien, E. Oollotte, T. Gardner, G, M. Park, L. J. Hooper, T. Osborne, W. G-; Beard, and Rev W. E. Paige; secretary and treasurer, Mr K.EChinchen.-i, ' Mr S. Wickenden hoped that rule 8 would be more strictly adhered to in the future. 'He also was of opinion that the time had not arrived for making gardeners and amateur's classes. Mr R. Brown would like to suggest to the committee that they inaugurate a dog and poultry show. FEATHERSTON ROAD "BDARD. A meeting of the Featherstoit Road Board was held on Saturday last. Present—Messrs Jas. Donald- ((Chairman), H. H. Jackson,'W. E. M Bidwill, and D.
