(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) IMDON, May 17. The Freeman's Journal has a severe article upon the attitude assumed by the Pope in connection with the policy of the Irish agitators. Jt asserts' that his holiness has been misled as to the facts,'and that .he was acting in .ignorance of the principles which actuate the leadeis of the Irish agitators. Mr Sexton raomber for Sligo, in,the House of Commons, • suggests that a deputation should be sent to Rome to lay the details of the agitation before the Pope and remonstrate with Him upon the action he has taken. Negotiations of a pacific nature are now proceeding between the German Government and the Papal See. Consequent representations made by the European powers in connection with the Turkish misrule in Armenia, the Sultan has consented to introduce a series of reform's in tho Government of that country. The disturbances which have recently arisen at Port Said have induced the English Government tostrengthen their garrisons at that place. A law has been passed in Egypt conferring the right of voting upon every inhabitant who has attained the age of 21 years.
May 21. The contributions of the Irish people towards the Parnell Fund are rapidly increasing. It appears that the encyclical letter issued by the Pope forbidding subscriptions on behalf of Parnell basso far had an effect contrary to that expected by his Holiness, Bismarck, who was recently reported to be recovering from his severe attack of neuralgia, has suffered a relapse, He is again a weak state, and his friends are despondent of his recovery, ; In furtherance of the/'promise recently given by the Porte in connection with the introduction of a series of reforms in Armenia, the Sultan has appointed a commission to inquire into the matter, and draw up a report.. ■ •..:■■. A great amount of distress prevails in the Cachar district, Bengal Presidency, India, consequent upon the terrible floods which have recently taken place, and a serious famine is anticipated. A commission has been appointed to organise a scliemn for the relief of sufferers. A terrible hurricane have visited Aden causing a great distructiou of property. May 22. , Egan has delivered an address at Chicago upon the attitude assumedby the Pope in connection with the Irish affairs. He asserts that the encyclical letter issned by the Pope to Roman Catholic Bishops in Ireland is 1 an un warrantable/exercise of. papal power, and urges the Irish people to resist ■ Count Von Molke, Chief Marshal of the German Empire, is now on a visit of inspection to the forts.of the French frontier. A fund has-been started in ; London for the purpose of raising a subscription on behalf of the sisters of the late Lieutenant Waghorn, who were left in a state of destitution in Melbourne. The wheat crops throughout England are in a backward condition, but a good harvest is nevertheless anticipated. In America the yield for the present year .will not be equal to that of 1882. .
