:i ;;,Our weather reporter writes:—The early part of tho paat week was damp, the latter part wjth one exception, dall. A very sharp frost was experienced on the night of the Bth instant. Total rainfall for the week is '245 inch. The mean reading of tho Barometer is 29 77 inohcs j forthoThermometer it is fiOfail. The wind lias boon light during tho week but very changeable. Wehave tecoived from the Secretary of tho Wnirarapa Jockey Club the report and balance-sheet for 1883 Both the Spring and Autumn meetings were held under unfavorable auspices as far as weather was concerned, but notwithstanding this they were'flnancially successful Tho total receipts for the year amjunted to £1327, and the expenditure to £1283. Out of the latter nearly i'Boo was paid to winners, The Club starts its new year with nearly ii hundred and fifty pounds in hand, and financially it is. evidently in excellent health. With fine weather for meetings, nnd a racing ground on tho line of railway .we rbeliove the Club, with the assistance of its capablo secretary Mr E. R. Am s|rn'ng could beat the Empire City in facing enterprises. Within two years the Club's revenue has been increased by £SCO, and within another two years it may be augmented by twice or three times that sum if a Buitablo siteis obtained. We are glad, to notice that a motion hag been tabled, having this latter desideratum for its. object. A notice of motion in Mr Kimberley's name is also appended to tho balance-sheet to the effect that any horse racing;ob a; hack after having raced as a racehorse shall be debarred from entering for other than hack mm This is a rule that.if adopted will give satisfaction to the general public, and will tend to make hack rapeiw hat they should be. We observe the report also recommends the appointment of a permanent handioapper. This is also a move in the right direction and would be relieving the members of tho club who are generally appointed, from an unpleasant duty, ami unkind comments as. to. their uismteieai'edness. Taken altogether the report of the Wairarapa Jookey Club for 1883 contains the spirit of progress, and under its present management, the club'a motto is plainly ''■ Excelsior."'
