The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, MAY 11, 1883. THE COUNTY RATE.

InE Wairarapa East County took.the bull by the horns yesterday by abolishing toll gates and levying a half-penny rate. Wo expressed an opiriioif last week that a farthing rate .would be insufficient, and the action of the Council confirms the view : we entertained,: Crs McCardle and Chamberlain gave expression to a popular prejudice by opposing the additional rate, but, they were not, able to face the arguments; adduced in its favor. These councillors are popular representatives, and they, pay.tbe penalty of. their position,.by. having to advocate popular views on certain occasions when it is .impossible tip-holster them up by any : substantial argument. This year by the imposition, of a county rate an additional thousand' .pounds will have to be paid by the'ratepayers in the Castlepoint and Masterton Highway Districts. The'pay-. 1 ment of this thousand pounds secures a free gift of seven thousand pounds from ' the = Colonial revenuo. : To save the" ratepayera from this thousand pounds 'being taken out of thoir.pockets Crs McCardle and • Chamberlain would: throw away seven thousand pounds!. This" we cannot afford and we may hope that the .ratepayers will, yet, come to. the conclusion, :to.which/ we: havs arrived. If they do the conversion ~of Crs McCardle and Chamborlain will follow very, quickly.;; r-
