The goods were brought to the summit of the'Rimutaka in a narrow bullock dray—this dray was made on purpose for the narrow road, for at that time an ordinary dray could not bo brought up at the top of tbo hill, ; the buliooks were packed on 'tfro; 'summit and. the supplies brought down as fat as Burlinp'a accommodation liduaa at Featheraton. From thence they werfl conveyed by dray again, You may imagine travelling was pretty roflgn those days. It was no unoommon thing for the whole load to coma to grief, and;then there would be a" row on" with tbe'owners over, the damaged goods. The road down this side of the Eimutaka was widened and repaired by some of the Greytown residents, and my son Thomas waslthe first to bringa team right through from Wellington; to Greytown. There was; great rejoicing over the eyeut—indeod, quite'ajollitiotttion. We thought as much of our bullock dray coming over in. three, days., as the residents of the valley did in 1878 when the railway waß .declared open for traffic over the same hill,: The cost of conveying goods from Wellington then was £2O a ton.
