ENGLISH CONSUMPTION OF AMERICAN CATTLE.
In an interview recently with » Ntw > York Tribune reporter, Albert Pell, M.P.. one of the Royal Commission on • American cattle who visited this country in 1879, made the following comments on the effect of the consumption of American cattle in England : "The viewwhi<m"l~todkin report to the GoVernmenYjh 1879 was that i England had nothing to few from the of Americai cattle, my befietWi&gatthat time that the increase in the poppl«tion,of the United States would soon fidi suchta price upon meat that it would make it difficult to export it to England with profit. Three years' experience has verified that opinion,/1 find® prices at retail of good meat at Newark, and of butter, eggs and cheese,* UiWii very little from those charged 'uV England. The trade in refrigerated beef has abated also, for ,its exportation is extremely ' hazardous." In my trip this time I did not see so many; old -cattle about aa before, and I think we hale eaten up i good bit of ybu'rjtore. h % has been said by an'obseriingWn, 1 and I think that I can endorse i it, that England never begins upon ,tho meat supply of any country that she does ; not eat it short. The cattle' that Isaw this time were younger than before, aad you won't be abla> to-supply us so fast as heretofore with old beeves. You will have to come to what we are doing in England—and what are you already doing, for that matter, in Kentucky and Missouri—developing lyour cattle with a view to producing 'as large an animal as possible at twojyeani of age. I was much struck with some cattle I saw in Missouri; they were very fine I thought."
