MASTERTON INSTITUTE.
A meeting of ratepayefs ; ;!w,as held at the Institute last evening 'to recommend to the Borough Council a managing committee for the ' Mastcrton Library. Mr Biah, the: Jfayor, presided. ";;. . The Chairman, in opening the' proceedings, regretted that: some of the old members of the committee—Mr Boddington and MrSellar—had intimated that they would riot stand for reelection. He called for nominations. Mr J. 0. Boddington'nominated Mr Carraiid Mr W.G. Beard. - Mr Payton said he had no intention of standing again himself, but would like to see some of the younger members of the Institute on the committee, and would nominate Messrs Redman/ 'Morison, and DeCastro. ', Mr Grundy nominated Mr Rapp, ,and Mr Woodroofe proposed Mr Hogg. • Mr Hogg declined'td stand j he preferred to make-room; for some other member, believing a. change of blood to be a good policy. ' : ' Mr Boddington then nominated the RevMrlsitt, Mr McCardle oxpressed a hope that tho names of some of the old members would be retained on the new committee, and proposed Mr Boddington, in the. hope that that gentleman would re-consider his decision not to stand. Mr Boddington .took; great interest in the Library, and hardly ever missed a meeting. Mr Boddington. thanked Mr McCardle, but had made'u'p his mind not. to stand; He .had taken great interest in the work, and with respect'to hardly ever missing a meeting, he. ;might say that ho had worked''on six bodies, and .only missed one.meetini? since he had been in Mastertdn.—(Applause). • .'Mr Easthbpepfeposed Mr Caselberg,. ' The' Chairman'; .jio'wever, -and Mr Mcintosh explained-that .Mr Caselberg was absent in Wellington and.had expressed his intention of not-standing again. '"' Mr Easthope was then nominated by Mr Hogg, MrW. H. Beetham by Mr Feist, and Mr D. McGregor by Mr Grundy. ■■■■ ; Mr Boddington proposed Mr McCardle, but the latter declined to stand on the score of other public duties. Mr R. ; .Brown having been nominated by Mr Rapp, a ballot was taken, Messrs: Woodroofe and Hare, acting as scrutineers. "■ •: The result was as follows:—Grundy, 27'; Beetham, 25; Brown, 24; Isitt, 23; Beard, 22 ; ; Carr, 19; Easthope, 18;.McGregor.. 17; and Rapp,. 16; who were declared duly elected. The other candidates were. Mr Redman, 15; Mr Hall,-i5; Mr Morison, 14; and Mr DeCastrp, 14.''; ■ ; '\ Mr McCardle proposed'a vote of thanks to the retiring Committee. Mr Woodroofe seconded the vote, P'ofonna,M in, an amusing speech declared that; some of the old Committee were ; not fit to sit on any .public body, as they desired to .deprive the ratepayers of their.' privilege of electing a Committee. ,' : ~.. :•. :" The;vote waslcarriedj andithe'meeting broke up with the customary compliment to the chair. :;
