A TERRIBLE DEATH.
: (PRESS ASSOCIATION.) : : ',■/ Napjeb, thia dtfy. An inquest was held on the body of John Smith, who lost his life at a sawmill at Waipukarau- yesterday.■ The' jury returned a verdict of accidental death. The evidence shewed that de-
ceased, who was working nearer the saw than was > necessary, was at one find of the. log, and hia brother i (B. Smitk) at the other,.: Tho deceased'was not• Seen to fall by either of the three witnesses, but they suddenly heard a loud Call or scream, •followed by an unusual sound from the saw. They then saw the deceased lymg motionless on the bench, with the saw buried in his body. The engine was stopped almost at the same time as the cry was heard, but when those . near the deceased ran up to the,, bench he was I found to be quite, dead and his body cut in two. The, saw-had entered'the neck, severing the ann at the right shoulder, and cuttirig through the chest I'.in an oblique direction, and coming almost out at the right hip. All the witnesses agreed that death must have been instantaneous..
