. THE SYNOD AT NAPIER . LIVELY PROCEEDINGS. Napier, April 4 At the meeting of the Synod to-day, there was a lengthy and amusing debate on a motion by Mr Pierce, of Auckland, that no charge, direct or indirect, be made for admission to churches. His object was to prevent musical entertainments being given in churches, Archdeacon Mannseli, in a humorous speech, opposed the motion, which was ultimately lost on division, the Synod considering that the responsibility of preventing improper performances in churches should be thrown on the clergyman of each parish. All Saints', St, Matthew's, and St. Paul's Churches in Auckland, and St, Martin's in Dunedin were instanced as places where churches imtl been used for simple musical performances, a charge being made at the door. Mr Pierce, at the conclusion of the voting, in some heat, laid on the table copies of the War Cry, the Salvation Army's organ, saying that some clergy might like to read them, as they might feel inclined to invite the army to play its antics in their churches as a variation from the other performances. The Synod refused leave to let them lie on the table.
