The Sydney-" Daily Telegraph" of a late date.states that Mrs St, John, daughter of Sir Hercules Robinson, tho late Governor of New South Wales, and wife of Major St. John, liis aide-de-camp, has eloped with Major Stephenson. As might be expected, bucli an event has created the most painful and intenso excitement in what is known as "high life." Sir Hercules was so deservedly popular and had earned the respect and esteem of so many, not only by his ability, but by his geniality and tho encouragement he gave sport, that the greatest sympathy is felt for him. . The following is tho text of the paragraph in the "Daily Telegraph" : " Private letters have been received by the mail just arrived which cannot but fail to give pain to the very numerous friends of His Excellency Sir Hercules Robinson, who was for six years one of our most popular Governors. It appear that some two months prior to the departure of Sir Hercules, from the Cape of Good Hope Udy Robinson and her daughter Mis St. John left for England in advance of their husbands, Sir Hercules and St; John, his son-in-law and aide-de-camp followed in duo course,, but the younger lady was fickle towards her spouse, and when she heaidof hisdeparture from tho Cape, thought lit to olope with a Major Sfcophenson who had been paying her considerable attention.' When Sir Herculas and Major St. John arrived in London, the guilty pair had flown. Tho unfortunate affaircausedconsiderable excitement in colonial circles in London, and great sympathy was expressed for Sir Hercules/'
