The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, APRIL 2, 1833. THE NORTH COUNTY MEETING.

The County meeting at Masterton on Saturday last was a very satisfactory one, excepting perhaps for its length. We do not like an order paper which takes eight solid hours of continuous work to get through, but wo fear that it will not bo the longest sitting on record, The very large amount of business transacted on Saturday was only the prelude to a still greater amount that must necessarily follow. The Counci would, as a matter of fact, have done more on this occasion, and thrown another hour or so in if the South County, in a spirit of philosophical inquiry, had not postponed for a month the adjustment of the accounts between the two bodies, and by so doing put a brake on the operations in the Northern division. The North County is evidently what our American cousins would call "a livo body." Its Councillors apparently have no desire to shirk work, and already they are inundated beneath a shower of it, They aro quite risjht in starting public works all over the district. The Roads and Bridges Construction Act may not be immortal, and though it is a curious Act to work under, it is porous. Money is to be squeezed out of it, and they who first come get first served, One important matter decided by the Council at this meeting was that the County should 'maintain the district lines of road. The logical consequences of this decision is, Ist, a County rate, 2nd, the abolition of toll gates. On other grounds a County rate is inevitable, As one must be levied it may just as well be made a substitute for | toll gates, which, though a convenient I mode of raising money, are not ieconomical methods of taxation. The march' of civilisation usually carries away toll gates, and we need not hold atangiover our local "pikes," The appointment of Mr J) 1 , G, Moore as County Clerk will be received with favor as one made in the best interests of the County. His qualifications for the duties of the office are undoubted, and he has enjoyed in former years a special experience on the Works Committee of the late West County, which will be of the greatest service to him in his new position. . We cordially approve too of the recognition of Mr R. Wilsone's past services by a bonus of fifty pounds. A year ago the late East County was in a ;tery impecunious position, and this' officer consented without a murmur to carry on the work at a nominal salary until things got better. The work he has done for the County has not been recouped by the payment made for it, and the bonus of Saturday last was simply wiping off a debt which was due to him,

The ordinary meeting of the Greytown Borough Council will take place this evening. The first parade of the Greytown Rifle Volunteers under the new regulations will beheld to-morrow evening. It has been decided, that .the members of the Greytown football club will, meet for practice on Saturday next when a drop kicking practice will be indulged in or a scratch match played if the ground is not too hard, The annual meeting of the club will be held at an: early date to receive balance sheet and, elect officers for the coming season. : : i Mr F, G, Moore has been appointed Clerk to the Wairarapa Bast County Council.;. ; : The Secretary of the Wnirarapa Acclimatisation Society has recieved another consignment of Btarlinga from the Canterbury Society. • : The half yearly meeting of the Master-ton-Opaki Jockey Club on Saturday-even-ing last was postponed for a week in cnnse rjuence; of; only some three or ■ four mmnborß being in attendance oh that date ;An Assessment Court forthe; Borough .of Masterton was advertised fur Saturday.
