.A meeting of the East County Council was held at the County offices, Masterton,.at noon to-day* Presenters Beetham (Chairman), McGregor, Belliss, Chamberlain, Mackay, and W. H. Beet Lam, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. •.'■■• COMtESPONDRXCE,—INWAKD. Prom Smith & Hogg calling attention to the action taken by the Wairavapa West Council in dividing theiv advertising and asking the Council to divide its advertising in a similar manner. , :'•'' From Mr C. Bogcrs of; Castlepoint calling attention, to Baird's and Brown's line from Whakataki to Castlepoint and comparing their respective advantages,and disadvantages. From the Castle Point Highway enclosing resolutions passed with reference to a line ofrjad between Tiraumea and Masteiton, the Uriti line, and stating that Crs Williams, Bellis, and Mackay were authorised to arrange re employment of Engineer on behalf of Board.
From Thomas Telford withdrawing his name from a petition for the Castle Point road which, he had signed, on the ground that he had been misled.
A petition was received signed by a number of settlers in Castlepoint and Tinui, advocating Ashcroft's Line to Castlepoint, on the ground that it lessened the distance by two miles, avoided the Whakataki river bed, and .would reduce cost of carriage,—The alternative route Brown's Line was condemned as longer, having no available metal on it, and being liable to land slips. A letter was road from Mr Mcllutchon, pointing out that the petitioners for Ashcroft's Line had been misled by Mr C. Bogcrs, and challenging the statements made in the petition. The Council at this stage adjourned for lunch.
