CORRESPONDENCE.

[to ihe editor wairarapa dauy.]

Sir,—ln a recent issue'of your paper I notice a report of a meeting of our Town Lands Trustees, which shows that a resolution was the Government the "right"of land where the old town''hall stood at a sum of money which I consider a good remuneration, namely, £2OO. This offer seems likely to be accepted. In a previous issue to the one mentioned, I notice that a joint/meeting of the Masterton and Greytown Trustees was held, and that at this meeting the Greytown the Masterton Trustees the 'sum of £2501 for their share of the Greytown 40 aero reserve. This, I understand, they are likely to accept, with the consent of the Masterton householders, who will do well to instruct their' Trustees co end trouble between Masterton and Greytown by excepting this amount in. satisfaction of all claims. From the foregoing it > will be seen that the. Trustees are likely to have a't their disposal the sum of £460. This amount, together with the cash credit already at their disposal, will give them finances in hand to the amount of about £llOO. \ ,\ Now, what are cur Trustees likely to do with/the above \ They have already decided, in spite of public opinion to the contrary, that they will not build a town hall. Then tho question arises, what arothey, codo with itl 'They cannot, without failing in their duty as trustees, 'allow .this money to lay and accumulate at alow rate, of interest when there we public'institutions in the town in debt.

: Firstly, the Masterton Park, whose Trust took upon themselves to incur a •liability a few years ago for the purpose of planting and m%r fyirig it for ths public good,' wliich said sum has: not : .yet ; been repaid. This amount, then; is one of : the first that should be redeemed by the *;Town Lands Trust's funds. .Th'e'nefcfcis the liability on These two items of expenditure should be,the yeryi firafr demand upon the Trust funds. -The inhabitants of Masterton may then-be-proud of i having whatvery few other 'towns in. New Zealand' well laid out, a Public .Library of' 110-"meaa pretension, and a valuable. TownXands estate free from incumbrance.-' ,; ;'-. ; V I hope our Trustees '!wili : 6s: that these siigg«?stionß are proper ones for them to: act upon, more particularly when they -consider that' they are pledged to .provide interest for'them in the: interim at a. considerably:,higher rate than they are likely to-get for their credit balance. ■ '■•;? lam, etc, : A? .:-.'j •-. . HoUSEIIOLDER, Masterton,. March 24th, 1883.
