TOMLINSON AND HAYWARD'S IMPROVED GLYCERINE DIP.
; %Q Lyltelton Times of the 16th inat: <" has the following:— - -• \ Through tlio kindness of Mr George r '"' 'Holmes', of Bangor station a trial of this dif was made yesterday; a large ' number of his sheep being treated with r „ it,, Mr 0. P. Hayword, a hiomber of jjf. /t tho film concerned in its manufacture, .b,' .being anxious to sheep'<'*'i owners and persons interested in p.istoial matters thevahie of its liquid, obtained permission to make use of the yards, dip, tk, atthe ; Bangor estate, for that purpose. ' A party of gentlemen loft town for Bangor by the early train with Mr Hay ward; Among those present at the trial wero Messrs J. Deans, M'Eae,P. B. Boulton,.C. Whitefoord, J. M'llraith, of Homebusli and othors, besides members of the local Press. ........ . The merits claimed by Mr Hay ward for his dip are that is a sure, cure for ■•• ticks, lice, parasites of all kinds in sheep, and for other vermin, and for •Buoh skin diseases as mange and scab in different animals, Also, that it possesses emollient and stimulating properties which are very beneficial to the skin and fleece, increasingthe weight ■ . ■ .of the latter arid improving its qualities. Furthermore, no alkalies or other deleterious compounds are used in the mixture of which the dip is oomposed, • the wool is not broken or discolored by it, as is sometimes the case with other
. dips. That these claims were well '; .established appeared evident, in so far as could be judged from watching the dipping. Enough dip was taken out for the ; process of cleaning 1000 sheep, but this number was not reached in the cajfeiof flie proceeding, The dip it--omi is by no means a new invention : having been in use in different parts of the world for seventeen years, more especially in England and on the enormous sheep stations of South America. It has lately come into favor in New Zealand, and 63 tons Of it have quite recently been imported to this colony, Mr Hayward has been experimenting with it up in the Howke's Bay district and.holds ; numerable testimonials, as to its efficacy, and flattering newspaper reports from the same district of that made there under the eye of Mr Fitzßoy, inspector of sheep. Yesterday's proceedings gave conclusive proof of the power of the mixture, which is of a light pink when mixed with the necessary amount of water to kill ticks. The sheep were allowed to stay in the concrete bath about half a minute, and no live " varmin" could be found upon them afterwards, though diligent search was made, besides which the fleece appeared decidedly whiter. Some dogs, too, were treated to a plunge in the dip with marked results in the : wholesale destruction of fleas. One greyhound in particular, which was searched in vain for one about an hour afterwards, The proportion of the mixture was one to forty of water. By catchingalivo tick and consulting a stop ■■' watch, it was found that five seconds' immersion in the liquid meant deadly sickness for the vermin, lOsecs being equivalent to destruction by inches, ■■■' and 15secs sudden death. Mr Hayward's composition mixed up very ■ readily with the aid of cold water only, and was noticed to bo slightly thicker than the dips ordinarily employed by :i flock-masters, here. This, it is stated, is owing to the large quantity of glycerine and other ingredients, which saturate the wool, and remain firmly • fixed at its roots for months, despite , rain and weather. Mr Hayward also showed plans for improved dipping-places, both for large and small numbers of sheep, which met with approval from the experts present. For that intended to serve for great flocks he is about to endeavor to get a patent in New Zealand..
