THE GLADIOLUSSWINDLE

' Sir,—l' read' 'with ' interest' the account given in your columns a few days ago of the South' Canteibury gladiolus swindle, and have been waiting to' see if' yoii' would ' report the finale, but as you have not done so per' mit me on the authority of the Canterbury Times to inform your readers that tho. perpetrator of the'swindle was caught and awarded three months' imprisonment, for: his cleverness. . Last winter an almost:; similar_ swindle was perpetrated here; a local gardener sold by auction a large number of gladiolus bulbs, each bulb was wrapped up separately in a piece of paper and a name attached, and they were sold as "choice named varieties;" but those who bought them found when tho blooming season came .that: '■ they J were nothing 'but the commonest' Varieties, which are regarded almost as weeds in every garden about MastertonT I would commend to.the careful.study.of our local genius this South, Canterbury case. "Honesty.is the best policy" even.when selling gladiolus, and though people may suffer to be cheated once he may rest assured that, any: future attempt at;a similar swindle will bring down upon him the punishment he riehly deserves." ~,-,, ~.•... •AYictim.
