Oram Sheppard's creditors was held yesterday at which the stated liabilities were £40,000, and the assets £50,500. Of the liabilities £40,000 are secured. Tauranga, Wednesday. News from Tanpo states that during last week several shocks of earthquake have been felt there. One of unusual severity occurred at about 12 o'clock on Tuesday evening, the tremor of the ground was felt for about six seconds, The shock was so violent that it half emptied a glass of water. • The oscillation of the earthquake wave was from North-West to South-East.
jMASTERTON BOBOUGH COUNCIL, The usunl /'meeting of the Council was held last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs, Gttpper, Feist, Price, MeCardlOj Heron, Perry, and Ouinohen. The minutes of tho previous meeting wore read and confirmed, and correspondence read, FEES AND FINES. A memo from the Colonial Trenauer stated thai the sum of £3lss had been placed to the credit of the Borough Fund for above. MR WRiotEY's BOAD, I', was resolved that the plans of Mr T. Wrigley's sections in Dixon's estate bo passed, and that Mr James Wrigley's bond be accepted for the due completion of the road through them. FOOTBRIDGES. Mr A, Jl, Bunny wrote suggesting the advisability of erecting two footbridges over the stream running through Dixon'B estate across the road aC the back of the Eagle Brewery and Mr Kenall's house. Referred to Works Committee to report upon.
WOKKS COMMITTEE, i The Committee reported hhving met on the 12th iiist;, and resolved ; that the men's wages be increased from 6s to 7s psr doy, and the overseer's to Bs. The overseer's report was read and dealt with as follows '.--Bentley Btos., have satisfactorily completed Short-street and Railway Road; Grushow has /finished- Nursery road; Tinsley is proceeding satisfactorily with Makora-slroet metalling. A small trap and grating .-are required in Perrystreet, near Mr McOartby'a cornor to carry off the storm water (ordered to be done.) The gutter and path in front of the Club Hotel' in Queen-street are covered with stagnant water in wet weather, The gutter at Gray's crossing requires tube lowered to let the water off (ordered to be done.) Mr Renall will allow surface stones to be broken in any of his paddocks ■ There is a suitable bed of gravel for footpaths in the Waipoua river, and Mr McKillop is willing to allow the Borough access to it through his prpperty. Repairs to Renall-streat will be commenced at once. Queenstreet gutters have been cleared out. Re Railway Road, the length is 10 chains 33 links. Chapman and Vaughan will stump and reform it, but not metal it. There is metal in Mr Donald's paddock under 2 feet of stripping, and he will give it pro vided the Council open a, proper pit.— The Committee resolved to recommend that the Council contribute two-thirds of the cost of Railway -Road. The plan of .new road through Mr T, Wrigley's properly was laid upon the table, and it was reported that Mr Wrigley had accepted the tender of bentley Jiroa. fur the work. It was resolved—That tho. work be proceeded with. Cr Heron, in moving the adoption of the report, said the only thing requiring mention ivas the raising of the men's wages. • The committee in their action had taken into consideration the fact that wages this winter wero likely to be high, and they considered it advisable to meet the times.
Or McCavdle seconded the adoption of the report. He was glad to see some action was to bo taken with regard to carrying off surface water, as this was no doubt to some extent the. cause of sickness in the Borough. The report was adopted. treasurer's report. Sin—ln accordance with a resolution of the Council, I attach a statement of outstanding rates, &c, also .liabilities required to be provided for before tho new rate is struck. I have the honor to ask that a special committee be appointed to which I can refer matters relatim; to outstanding rates, bucli committee to be authorised to deal with all debts due to the corporation and to report from time to time to the Council. The legal overdraft is £1,121 12s, the bank agreed overdraft is.uptoiJl.OOO. The now rate cannot be struck, until Bth April, owing to the lateness of the Assessment Court, Over £126 has been collected and paid in,since last meeting,
Or Feist moved that a special committee consisting of CraPrice; Perry.andtheniover be appointed, in accordance with the Treasurer's suggestion. There was a large amount outstanding on rates, and they should in vien of their present financial position make a strong effort to get them in.
Or Heron seconded. He hopel the opponents of a loan would soon see the necessity of it.
Or McOardle had no doubt he had this in his mind when naming'Cr Perry and Price, two staunch opponents, on the committee. He hoped those gentlemen would either be able to show the council ,o way nut of its difficulties, or come down with a report in favor of a loan. Cr McOardle reported thatSthe contractors for Makora road were cutting up river road by their traffic, and he suggested that the overseer should see that it be put in repair for the winter. Left to Works Committee., THE WATERCRESS NUISANCE. Or Ga'pper asked if notices ;had" been sent out to persons owning laud abutting on the creek running through the town. The Clerk-Yes. , , .• Cr Gapper-I ask because I notice the creek in the Trust acre near my place has not been touohed. Mr Meredith came and looked at it, but because he'could not get the work done for about half-a-crown, he did nothing else. : I will move that the Works Committee be authorised to .clear out -the;creek,-and charge Mr Meredith with the cost, : ; - "•"■'. : ■■'■:': Cr Perry ;would'havemuch : pleasure in seconding;:the resolution if Or Oapper .would-, amend.'it and[make it general instead of -individual."
