CORRESPONDENCE.
OUR PARK OVAL.
To THE EdIIOH, Sir,—A. meeting of persons interested m the Park was held a few weeks ago, and a very influential committee was appointed to consider the best way of putting the Oval in trim, and make it fit for reoreation purposes. This committee met last week; they have had the Oval pegged out, levels taken, and an estimate made out for the cost for the required work,, and then they can go no further, for the want of funds. After discussing various ways of raising the necessary money, they have decided upon the inevitable') subscription list." I think, Sir, it is time this practice of levying on the public for everything that is required for the general good is put a stop to. Why should the willing few put their hands in their pockets for the benefit,of the many I If that committee had ap-> pointed a deputation to wait npoii ' the Borough Council and place the matter m their hands, it would have been more in accordance with public feeling,-as the question is undoubtedly a borough one, that greatly effects it m a sanitary point of view, and if our Councillors would only consider the position they hold as a Board of Health, tlioy would at least provide a suitable place for recreation purposes, especially as it can be done for a very small outlay. In. this matter the Town Lands Trustees would, no doubt, assist if they were asked, and as they derive & considerable income from lands that have been reserved for educational purposes there should be no hesitation on their part in subscribing liberally towards this object, which is one of the most important brauohes of education. The Park Trustees would, lam sure, offer every facility for having Ihe' oval finished, and if our public bodies would unite in this desirable work there would be no difficulty , in pulling it through. I h>ipe when the committee next meet they will consider the question "in toto," and for : once, take a stand against these unjust levies. By inserting this in your valuable columns you will greatly oblige one who has always suhsoribed, but will in future be found in the ranks of the Anti-Sobsomber.
