The Wiararapa Daily. FRIDAY, MARCH 2, 1883. THE RAILWAY ROUTE.
We pppH in another column, a letter from Mr Hawkins .on th« route question, : It commences with an ingenious fallacy, but improvos towards its close, WheiiMr' Hawkins asserts I that" the supports of the Forty-Mile; Jush route ha-ye ,<&allenged yote of; the county," he betrays an almost astounding want of knowledge of ppblio opinion in this'district We can ajsure him that the settlers to whom he alludes did not introduce this element into the election, They'simply regretted that it should have been prejudiced by an agitation which they regarded as mischievous. Had Mr Hawkins called it a stumbling : block instead he would have hit the mark. The advocates of the Wangaehu route have scored a point in obtaining the support of. the Castlepoint Highway IJtoard. It is very natural that the (extreme .east of the .county should be be opposed to a route. A considerable portion of Mr HApfNS 1 letter is devoted to announcing; 'Mr McGeegOe's sentiments on tbo railway route question, Mi* MoQbboor has had a favorable opportunity of speakfor himself recently- had he chosen to do so. Possibly, Mr McGbegor's enthusiasm has already carried him too far in the Wangaehu matter, and his Bilence has been judicious, Still, if we are to have his sentiments, we,.,v/ould prefer getting them direct, and not through the mediumsblp of Mr. Hawkins. . Mr McGregor has, we .ishould say, already suffered enough in the Wangaehu cause without, being jvprried ,or. beguiled: into, repeating an, jndjsoretion.: He must, as a public . man, the convictions of his ponstituents^s.,,fellas his own opinion. White we do riot desire him to be false to hiinself on the one hand, we should be sorry to jeei ; him betray the confidence of •jyjs.sup'j porters on the other., Apart, howeveiy from these personal considerations, .we. : object in io{pto;the position! on which : .Mr;'HAwk:iiiß builds up his advocacy of I mo Wangaehu route. We can be no larties to taking such a risk...; We-jvill lot follow Mr Hawkins in his argu--nents in favor of this route because we •egard the discussion as igre«withhimwheivbeßayß""4hatthere' ? ' nust be a railway from Masterton.to Woodville islettled so far, and we don't wantit unsettled.. If.we-didje would enlist' inder Mr' Hawklns''"banner?"' We irust that the hinfe giy.en,in- Haw kinb' letter to make "the question "a' Oounty onej wfl] not be''taken.' We lave no objection to it beingidisoussed by. both Counties West and East, more specially by the former, as that Council xiuld approach the subject 'with' less bias, excepting that we feel certain that making a County question of it will lead to.no practical result, and'will not, assist the views of the promoters of the Wangaehn extension In conclusion we would assert that Mv Hawkins has grossly misrepresented the report made on this line by Mr Poy two years ago. In doing so, he has no 'doubt been misled by idle rumors current in his disj trict, but none the less is : he * to : blame for. making .very positive, statements whioh are unsupported by any. reliable facts.-From enquiries''^haveiinade we have come to. the. conclusion, that this report instead of being superficial and inaccurate is: exact and The )}i)o was surveyed and levels taken for a distance of over twenty miles from Maatertpn, and no mei'e ; assertion can upset the data recorded of thissectibn of it. Of this section, -we' untjerstandj the first six miles are favorable, but the next fourteen miles are simply impracticable. The ruling grade instead of being 1 in 42 as on tlie Forty-Jfilc Bush route is 1 in 25,and;on\ope.|aMe the grade reaches j. in I?. Throughout the U miles the track is tortuous ,anc circuitous, having to be cut out of steej
hill-sides. This is ft record of levels which is fatal to the project, ' Does Mr Hawkins go so far as to assert that
these levels are erroneous 1 ) If the advocates of the WangaehU' route chuik this they ought long ago to have sent ari engineer ( 'along...the jonte to test them. If'they do not go' sVfar as tbiß
it is idle for them to try and cram such levels down the throat of an experienced 'Public Works Department. ,-:• >
