The Wairarapa Daily. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1883. THE COUNTY ELECTION.

;, ——.♦ ' — Op the various county elections decided on Saturday last, the battle for.the representation of the Masterton Riding was first in point of interest and importance, In this election and in this one only, two tried, capable and experienced public men were challenged by two untried and inexperienced Settlers. The latter, however, commanded a block vote from the Scandinaviah settlers at Mauricevillo, andtoolc the position of being the candidates not of the Riding as a whole but of that section of it in which the foreign settlers were congregated, That the other parts of the Riding should have been roused to resist and overthrow this pretentious claim was not a matter of surprise. The action taken by the Mauriceville settlers however, created a stronger I feeling of antagonism than we anticipated. Wo expected them to be beaten, but we hardly looked forward to the defeat being of such an overwhelming character, The Mauriceville settlers by grasping at too muph have lost all. They have as it were put themselves in County matters out in the colrj, Jf, however, they learn from their present experience to distinguish their real friends from their bad advisers, the County election of 188,3 will not prove disastrous to their interests, It is a matter of sincere congratulation that the Masterton si(jling has returned its. best available men tp 1 the'"County Council. Mr against whom the Mauriceville organisation i was directed, polled on Saturday last: sixty per cent mora voles than he obtained he had the Suppprt of the Scandinavian settlers. The return of Messrs G. Beetham and McCaedle for the AJfredtop Riding iji satisfactory. We do not e&pect M) Q, Beethajji 'jty take a very prominent part hj ,tf|f 'fujw. Council as other and more important duties claim his attention, but the position he held in the former Council almost rendered his return imperative, Mr McCardle hasa special knowledge of! the Bush settlements, and his election will we trust prove beneficial to'theEketahuna and Pahiatua settlers. The full returns of the Waihuioru Riding are not, at the time we write, to; hand,' but the election of Mr. Beetham is assured, and' that of Mr Mebedith all but certain. Mr W. Hi Beetham is one of the oldest and most trusted public' servants of the Wairarapa, and his appearance at the' County table will be - welcomed., by alipost every Befctler in the district. His return, for, Wainuioru is one of the most pleasing features in the elections. At' Carterton, Mr Booth's return

'■■■■■ "• • ■ •'; ; ■ \ras a matter of course, and it is satisfactory to find liini heading ; ,.the poll:; > We regarded Mr Braithwaite's i'etlitn us certain but apparently Mr Nix ut tail*. him very.closely.. ProbablyMpßßAiTH-j ■, waite made too sure of his return j underestimated his: antagonistAHH should have been sorry to see hinTl'etr out of the Council, and are pleased to find that ho has secured his - seat. . W,e did not favor the election of Mr Coleman Phillips for the Grey town Riding because we feared thatsthe presence in the "VVest Council of three irrebonoile-. able?, like Meßsrs Booth, Bunny, and Phillips, would: have.. a .tendency; to; blpck County business, . Howeyer,;Mr; Phillips is in,'and we are quite ' pre* ■ .pared to give him fair: play, and will only bo too glad to find that we judged hinVloo hastily. • « i - .'!; V J I
