The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 23, 1883. THE NEW MEMBER FOR SELWYN.
Sir John Hall's probable successor in the House of Representatives is the Hon. E, Riciiardson. Ministers may lose a vote, and the opposition may gain one, but though a -supporter of the former we are satisfied with the result, The opposition wants levening ! It is very deficient in steady, respectable;' trustworthy men, and the accession of the Hon, E. Richardson to its ranks will raise its reputation throughout the country, and increase its power' for usefulness in the house. The best Ministry must deteriorate by coo lengthened a term of office, and it is quite a satisfaction to see the opposition party recruiting its strength with men fit to take the helm when the.time comes for a change. It is now some years since Mr Richardson sat in Parliament. On two occasions he has been beaten in seeking to find his way back to the Assembly, and had to give place to Mr Allwwgiit and Mr Piuiet, men who from almost, every point of view were his inferiors. The Hon. Mr Richardson is an experienced and trustworthy politician with a special practical knowledge of railways. He is also when at home a farmer among farmers, and is recognised by all parties'ns an honest man. We prefer to see men like this in the Assembly whether they be members of the Ministerial party or the Opposition. As the latter is yery sb.ort of them at the present time we fjo not for a moment grudge them the services of the Hon Mr Richardson,
