CORRESPONDENCE.

To THE EWIOE. ':-' Sin,—ln your leader, of yesterday commenting on the East County election, you go on to say, turning to Alfredton Riding, "Wo .'are sorry to Bee that the spirit of unfairness is also apparent there. A fortnight ago we said the Pahiatua settlers had a claim lor one representative in the: riding, and the Alfredton settlers for the other. The former have brought forward two candidates who evidently mean leaving Alfredton put in, the cold altogether," Sir, you are quite wrong. Pahiatua did not know anything about the nomination,; ■ they.did hot nominate me, and they knew nothing of Mr Von Redin, Why you should think Alfredton and Pahiatua should have the advantage of one member eaclvand Eketahunaand Mauriceville' be,left out,'l fail to see. Eketahuna is quite as large as Alfredton, and Mavriceville is not for behind in number of votes. I refuse to be dubbed a party man ; I stand as a member for the Riding of Alfredton, and.will, if returned, represent the -whole'-riding to : the best of my ability. No one part shall have my.special attention. My wish to . be returned 'as a member is to assist in opening up the County for settlement. I have long worked for this, and I think . with some success. I can see that the ; future success of this great and important : movement depends to a great extent on : the County Council. . Yours, etc., \Y;.W. Masterton, February 20th, 1888.
