The following story is told by the [ Taieri Advocate:—Not a hundred miles from Caversham there resides a policeman who, so the story ..goes, is remarkable for his officiousness and sharpness towardspublicaus. OneSundayrecently ] he saw a little girl enter a hotel and ti ■come out with a billy of what she said b was beer. (The limb of the law had been t] on the lookout all the morning, and felt that his patientshad been wellrewarded, and congratulated himself upon having a splendid case. Upon taking the lid off the billy, though, he was somewhat Z suprised to find nothing but pure water where he anticipated finding beer. The man in blue had been keeping an eye i on the hotel, and the wily publican had ' been keeping two eyes on the peeler; so, feeling sure that the litte girl would q be accosted, he 'had, unknown to her, filled her can with water instead of * beer, and then with some friends went out to enjoy the joke. The policeman was the only man who couldn't see •where the laugh come in. 1;
