MELBOURNE, ~ . February 15. Received Pebruaiy 15,1.45 .p.m.— The nominations for; the'general • election were made this morning, and the following candidates were declared, elected without'' opposition for 'their respective constituencies:—Benambra, P. B. Wallace; East Bourke, E. Harper; Brighton, J. Bent; Dundas, 0. M. Officer j.Evelyn, E. H. Cameron; GippslandSouth, F. 0. Mason; Kilmore, T.Hunt; Kynoton, 0. Young, Maldon, J. Molntyre; Morningfcon, J. Gibb; Portland, H, J. Wrising. There now. remain 166 candidates for 75 seats, polling for which takes place on the 22nd inst. Murray opposes Francis and Williams, and Service and Patterson will contest the seat for' Castlemainewith Williams. In his speech this morning Mr Wrixon announced that he favored the formation of a Coalition Ministry composed of the best men from every party in the House. '
The police" last night effected the arrest of George Clark, of Clyde, Otago, on a charge of embezzling the sip of £4BO. The accused, was clerk of Yin-, cent County Council. Heisnpw detained in custody pending the arrival of a warrant frqm New Zealand. Laborers and drivers in the coal trade struck oi) Monday and it is now feared, that the strike \yill extend to the lumpers and.othors. Thoy demand that tho eight hours system shall be adopted, The masters refuse to agree to the demand of the men, and threaten to Jay up yessels engaged in' the coal trade.
