REI'OBT. " The committee have the honor to report that since their election they have held fourteen meetings, ordinary and special. The credit balance at the bank is £5 lis sd, liabilities 65.; against which is to be set off the capitation grant due from the Education Board for the December quarter, which will amount to about£lo. In connection with the financial statement, the committee wish to thank the Town" Lands Trustees for a grant of £10; received during the year and applied to general school purposes. ' , "At the last annual meeting of;, householders a resolution was passed: deprecating the reduction made by the Board in grants, to committees, which-' resolution was forwarded by Mr W. 6. Beard, chairman of the meeting, to the Board. In reply the Board stated that the reduction was due solely to the action of the Legislature, which , had reduced the grants mado to Boards by the amount formerly given to school committees, and tliat the Board how gave ass capitation grant to commit-- - tees through receiving no funds for the purpose from the Government. " The Committee must here record their opinion that it is undesirable that School Committees should be left with - ' out sufficient funds to carry on local works, and so be obliged to, appeal .to the Board for money to execute bimll improvements, and necessary repairs,:,; but they must acknowledge that the - Board have Shewn themselves ready to entertain in a liberal spirit any appli- : cation made to them by the Committee. . •
" A grant of £3O has been made for drainage of the head masters residence and play-ground, only part of which has been as yet. expended; and the Board promised to mako some much jieeded alterations in the residence ' when they have funds to spare for the purpose, •
"iSarly in the winter months, the .Committee consulted with the Bfeid Master as to the advisability of establishing a night school. He expressed himself willing to begin such a school ' if a suffioient number of young, people wished to avail themselves of it, and the Committee inserted an advertisement in the local paper inviting applications from those willing to attend. . One answer only was received to this invitation, so the project had to be abandoned,
" During the year the compulsory clauses of the Education Act, which were brought into operation in this district by the last Committee, have been strictly enforced, but the Committee have no means of preventing irregular attendance on the part, of the children, as it is possible for a child to . make the number of attendances required by law, and yet attend at such irregular intervals as to lose all benefit of schooling. In a recent report the Head Master called the special attention of the Committee to the irregular and unpunctual attendance of many of the children and informed the Committee that he intended in future to punish those guilty of irregularity unless they brought written excuses from their parents, Tho Committee fully approved of his intended action, and take this opportunity of inviting the attention of .parents to the absolute" necessity existing for regularity on the part of the "children, if the.school is be a benefit to thorn and and a to the district,, •
