THE PAHIATUA SETTLEMENT.
To THE EDIIOE. ; Sib,—The settlers here are highly amused by the leader in last Monday's issue of your contemporary, I don't know who it was the editor obtained hit information from, but it must have been from someone who kupw nothing about either the ■ottlemedt or settlers,' The latter he seems to-imagine'are a lot of "new chums," frightened"because the grass that ran to seed in the spring, has now turned to' hay. .He says we find ourselves " isolated, buried in the dirk wilderness,' shut out from the busy world around us," etc,, etc. I ean assure him we don't feel at all like that. We are qnile as busy as the rest of the " busy world," What with fencing, building of outhouses, and logging up, we are too busy to feel even discontented. I should just like the writer of that article to try and buy out one of thu settlers herej he would soon see if they wore dissatisfied with their holdings or not Then he says we ara "away from.society and its comforts." I think we have every comfort hero that will be found in Masterto'n j and as for society, the only thing the ladies here complain of is that they have too many visitors, and consequently a deal of extra work. Places like Alfredton may be called isolated, but not a place like this, situated on a main trunk road. This very morning I counted twelve travellers on foot and horseback, besides several vehicles, passing the door of my kouße. When the editor of your contemporary was here a.few weeks back, he, praised the settlers highly, and said that we must all be good bushmen or we oould not have made such improvements in suoh a short time. And now he says we are leading " artificial liveß," and are like a "fish out of water." I may mention that (tour sections excepted) Mr Balfour's 2000 aores were bought direct from the Government for cash. The four settlers bought out received a pound an acre on their bargains, and were paid for any improvements they had made. I would like to see a few I more gentlemen like Mr Balfour taking up land and spending large sains, as he is, on improvements, Trusting you will find room for thp above in your valuable paper, ' ; I am, etc., . i; • APawatua"NewCHDM," .
