The Wairarapa Daily. FRIDAY, JANUARY 5, 1883. HOLIDAYS.
The principal holidays of the year have just passed away, and after all under the most favorable conditions they amount to very littlo in the way of recreation to a largo section of tbe community. Those who toil in shops, offices, and warehouses, from the beginning of January to the end of Decern. ber got Christmas Day, Boxing Day, aud after a week's interval New Year's Day, as periods in which they may-be expected to recruit their exhausted energies; We do not believe that any medical man would admit that the human frame can be kept as it were in harness all the year round with such brief intervals 'of repose, without becoming impaiicd and debilitated. Kmployees in towns need: more holidays than they now obtain. The want is generally admitted, but there 'appears to be a difficulty ill meeting it. Rightly considered, the interests of employers'and employees are jflenticah; ; , If A as! the employer and B C D are 'tho employees, it is clearly to the interest of A that B C I) should be healthy and vigorous. If he contines them at their work for too long hours, if he gives them no substantial annual holiday, he is punished for. his illjborality by his employees becoming less capable of serving him than they would be if a reasonable and proper period of, recreation was assigned to each of them. An overworked ■ employee is rarely a profitable servant to his master, Such a man has it in his power to a considerable extent to work, .heart-; ily in his master's service or to work grudgingly, and; : in'' most cases he will adopt the latter rol6 if he considers that ho is not fairly treated!. In large centres of population- like London, terrible tales are told of the evils of overwork,; with which we have, wea> - o thankful to say, ing experience in a place like Masterton. Still, even in .this -iimall. townj there aro many instances in which an unduo amount of pressure is put upon employees, a pressure .which is. directly injurious to their health- and welfare, and which is indirectly ako prejudicial to. their employers interest.. In our owii office where a considerable'number of young porsons are employed,we fully recognise that their health and welfare require tbat.thoy, should., have some period of recreation outside the statutory holidays, and, we have decided to ,offer.' ; j'ach j? ,onp,'.of them ;>..oneweek's holiday iueach year.: In doing this we feel that wo are promoting both our. own interests and the interest's ! of Jhose who. work with us,, , To p)(nj
men a week's vacation in the year may;, seem ut small thing, but; to /.those who toil on.year atW-eyear; with'j lio. Ghristmas Day, Boxing Day, Year's week's holiday; is a great physical and mental blessing,' I'W;e'. would like to see;,all-employers .pf labor in'this and other townships of the district taking a broad and intelligent view of the question .of,holiday, reorea-. tion, and;giving-effect to, iiiby: some 1 practical and systematic procedure.' We> do-niot say tKat the rule we hayo laiddown for our own office is tho best one in practice, "bnt we simply claim 1 that we have made an honost attempt to recogniso the requirements ofour employees, and if others do the same a growing evil, will soon - be checked, and a reproach wiped away whichflias indubitably rested on many a Wairarapa employer., . ......', The Masterton.lWii. The residence of Mr E. S. Maunselj, at Rivoradale, had a narrow escape from being destroyed' by fire on Wednesday.
