DEATH OF A FRIEND TO THE QUEEN.
Her Majesty has sustained a seyere —she herself says an irreparable—loss by the death, at the age of 73, of Dr. Wellesley, Dean of Windsor. The general public knew nothing of the Dean, or if they occasionaly saw his name in the papers they only thought of him as a clerical courtier. No doubt
the. Dean as Resident Domestic Chaplain to Her Majesty, arid Registrar to the Order of the Garter, with a deanery which! was almost as valuable as a, .bishopric, had his share of good things in this world, but after all he was not a man who could fairly be confounded with such functionaries as the Gold Stick in Waiting or the Secretary, to the Board of Green Cloth. He was a confidential friend and trusty counsellor of the Sovereign, and so well beloved by her that she bad his portrait painted and placed iu the vestibule of the private apartments at Windsor Castle as a companion to; the picture of Dean Stanley. When the secret history of the present, reign is made public, his name is certain to ■ figure largely in contemporary diaries and correspondence. He was a, moderate High Churchman and a close friend of Mr Gladstone, whom he had ;known all;' his life, and with whose •political and ecclesiastical views he generally, agreed. .The Queen, laments m him the loss of the last of her "early friends—of those who stood by her. side ;and enjoyed her confidence when as a gitl she itssumed the responsibiliqueensliip.., When at Windsor she spent njuch time in social intercourse with the Dean and his wife, whose little tea-parties , had to her all the attraction of genuine domesticity, -
