The,mention of Puriri's ancestors will re: call to breeders tha victories in this- Colony 1 of Manuka, Peeress, Korari, Knknpo,''Longlands, Papapa, Lacenfced, Songster, Tarn-: buritii, and a host of othorß, whilst' in Victoria and New South Wales, the excellence of the Melbourne-Sir Hercules' oross shone out in Progress, whose sire, Angler, is; from Towton's own sister, Marchioness,' and whose dam, Coquette, is by Sir Hercules. Claiming close relationship to so man; great racehorses it is unnecessary to do more than briefly mention— That Waimea was full sister to Zoe, winner of twn Australian Champion Races,; also to Cossack, B;iy Middloton, Flora, 10, and Kutwithj tha latter so well-known in this district as a sire. That Waimoa's sire, Sir Hercules, was also sire of The Barb, and Yattendon, tho. latter for years the premior stallion of Australasia, who, in his turn, gave us Grand Flaneur, Chester, and Bcores of other notables, . ; Towton's sister, Marchioness, won the Englißli Oaks, and is the dam of . Fishhook, Rose of Denmark, Angler, and: King of Olubs, the latter is now in tho Middle Park Stud, Canterbury, •. That the Pier, Towton's brother, is the sire of Manuka, Peeress, Troy, and Darabin, That Manuka is the sire of Duchess, winner of the V.R.C, Handicap, for 3 and 4 year olds, beating a good field. That Towton is the sire of Korari, Tambourini, Kama Kama, Songster—sire of Hornby—Atalanta, danrof Pungawerewere, Waiiti, dam of Ms. That the Marquis, who won the 2000 Guineas Stakos and St, Leger, subsequently ninninjj Caractacus to a head for. the Dorby, is now in the Buniloora Park Stud where Lurline is, and is half brother to Towton, being also a son of Cinizelli, and sire of the Painter, Newminstor, His 1 ordship, Ac.1 hat Puriri as a racehorse amongst our very best performers stood quite in the first rank, winningthel)unedinDerby, beatingßribery, Fallacy, Hippocampus, Danebury, Dead Heat, and Spray, and to quote from the report "having all his field beaten half a mile from home, won liands down."' Only Dead Heat would oppose him in the Canterbury St, Leger, which Puriri also won in a canter.
As an index to the high character Puriri possessed when racing it is only necessary to state that he was handicapped as a four-yeac-old to carry the crushing weight of Ost lib in the Canterbury Metropolitan Handicap, 1877, IJ miles, and then started at 2 to 1 when Templeton, aged, only had 9st3lbs allotted to him, Ariel, fiyrg, !)stßlbs, and Foul Play, 3yrs, onlj carried Cat 71bs. Add to Puriri's undoubtedly high credentials for breeding and performances, that he stands over 16 hands ivith proportionate substance all through, and ownors of brood mares can form a fair estimate of the capabilities of the sire placed at thoir services for the ensuing season—whether for breeding racehorses, hacks, or carriage horses, Puriri has been at the stud three years, and was awarded two first prizes and two champion prizes at Patca. and first prize at Wauganui, also the champion cup for the beßt thoroughbred on the ground.
