RESULTS OF THE CENSUS.
Acoording to the.census of 1881, the uumber of British subjects in the colony was 471,726. Onli-se, 224,404 were hum in the colony. The Chinese in-, created from 4442 in 1878 to 5033 in. 1881, .
The number of persons who objected to state their religious belief amounted to 13,978—0r 38*530 in every 1000 peraonß. Froiejtßntß of all denominations numbered 393,961; Roman Catholios (inoluding 55 members of Greek / Church), 68,984 ' Freethinkers inoreased from 490 in 1878 to 2422 m 1881, The following were the numbers in certain speoiOo occupations in each of the census years 1878 and 1881:—Clergymen, 458—556: lawyers, 285-362; medical men, 273 317; civil engineers (not Government), 183-228 r ■ schoolmasters,' 907—1128 ; schoolmistresses, 1000-1255; capitalists, 235-241; morchants, 533-618; anctioneera, 143—188; commission agents, &c., 329-569; bank officers, olerks, 670. -760; .public compnn; officers, 103—152; commercial,clerks, 1 2576-3428 ; agriculturists, 37,479-42,722; engaged in pastoral pursuits, 5516—5541; servants and,,farm laborers, 12,560-12,544; book* sollefs hud stationers,l9o-246; book, binders, 140—149; printers; compositors; 1005-1270; newspaper proprietors, edi« iorsrpublishers, 165-212,
